Why I Teach Agriculture?

How I have been personally motivated to seek an adventure greater than myself by my agricultural teachers is what I desire to share with my future students as an educator. Although countless individuals may stress that involving students in industry is the main goal of an agricultural education program, I personally see involvement in industry as a springboard into other opportunities outside of agriculture. As a result of taking myc lasses, students should become informed consumers of the agricultural world and advocate for it in their everyday lives. These end results can be achieved in a variety of paths that my students may take following graduation: post-secondary education, family life, entering the workforce, and more. My goal is to set students up for success in any future they decide to pursue through the technical, soft, and personal skills one develops through agricultural education. At the end of the day, I hope more for my students to enter a career/academic major of their preference confident in their abilities gained through FFA, agricultural education, and experiential learning. I will also strive to communicate with parents, administrators, and other stakeholders alike who may view the 3-component model as an automatic path to becoming a farmer. Rather, I will stress to them the significant development of key skills through this model that cannot be found in any core content class. Agricultural education offers a gateway to seeing the world surrounding society today with fresh eyes.
